About Miguasha National Park

Located on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, Canada, Miguasha National Park protects some of the world's most important Devonian fossil sites. The park is centered around the fossil-rich cliffs of the Bay of Chaleur, where remarkable paleontological discoveries have revealed over 100 species of ancient fish and plants dating back approximately 380 million years. The terrain combines rugged cliffs, sandstone and shale strata, and the tidal beachfront, providing dramatic landscapes that offer striking views of the bay. Visitors to Miguasha can explore the outdoor trails along the cliffs and visit the on-site paleontology museum, the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, which displays many of the fossils found here and explains their scientific significance. Hiking through interpretive trails allows guests to see fossil-bearing rocks and learn about early vertebrate evolution. Beyond its geological and scientific importance, the park is also an appealing spot for nature walks and birdwatching with coastal flora and fauna. The park is accessible year-round but is most popular in late spring through early fall. Miguasha National Park draws visitors interested in natural history, geology, and peaceful coastal outdoor activities. Its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 acknowledges the global value of its fossil record and the preservation efforts that maintain this window into Earth's distant past.
